Does TikTok Shadowban Exist? What TikTok Officially Says

TikTok never uses the word “shadowban.” But it does have an official mechanism that limits who sees your videos — For You feed ineligibility. Here’s what’s real, what’s a myth, and how to check.

Does TikTok shadowban accounts?

“Shadowban” is a creator word, not a TikTok word. Search TikTok’s official Community Guidelines and you will not find the term anywhere — TikTok does not publish, confirm, or define a “shadowban.”

What TikTok does publish is a system called For You feed eligibility. Some content is simply not recommended into the For You feed (FYF) — the main discovery surface — even though it stays on your profile and can still be found by people who look for it. When people say they’ve been “shadowbanned,” what they’re usually describing is this: their videos stopped being recommended, so reach fell. That part is real and documented. A secret, permanent, whole-account ban with no cause and no record is not something TikTok describes.

What does TikTok officially say?

TikTok’s Community Guidelines organise content into standards, and some of those standards are labelled “FYF Ineligible.” In the guidelines overview, TikTok says that when it identifies content that falls under those standards, it “won't be recommended in the FYF.”

TikTok also describes an account-level version of the same idea. In its Accounts and Features guidelines it says that when “accounts that don’t break the rules still post a lot of content that’s ineligible for the FYF,” it “may make the account and its content ineligible for the FYF and harder to find.” That is the closest thing to an official description of what creators call a shadowban — and notice what it is: a reach and discoverability limit, applied under a documented policy, not a hidden ban with no cause.

Even if a video doesn’t make it to the FYF, people may still find it through search or by going to a creator's account.TikTok Community Guidelines — For You feed Eligibility Standards

This is the crucial nuance most “shadowban” explainers miss. FYF ineligibility narrows one surface — recommendations — not your whole presence. Your posts don’t disappear. They just stop being pushed to people who aren’t already looking for you.

How does TikTok actually limit reach?

TikTok describes a graduated set of enforcement actions rather than a single on/off ban. Reading its guidelines, the actions fall into roughly four levels:

ActionWhat happensIs it a “shadowban”?
RemovalContent that breaks a “Not Allowed” rule is taken down.No — it’s gone, not hidden.
FYF ineligibleContent stays up but isn’t recommended in the For You feed. This is the real mechanism people mean.
Age-restrictedContent is made viewable only for adults.No — it’s a gate, not a hide.
Account actionA warning, temporary feature or account restriction, or a ban, depending on what happened.Only in the “harder to find” sense TikTok describes for accounts posting a lot of ineligible content.

Two things matter here. First, TikTok describes FYF ineligibility mainly at the level of individual content — a single video can be affected while your other videos are fine — with the account-level version reserved for accounts that post a lot of ineligible content. Second, TikTok is explicit that low views are not proof of a penalty. Its FYF standards say: “If a video isn’t getting many views, it also doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule.” Reach naturally rises and falls.

Which shadowban claims are myths?

Because TikTok doesn’t use the word, a lot of folklore has filled the gap. It helps to separate what’s documented from what isn’t.

Common claimReality
“Your whole account is secretly banned.”TikTok documents content-level FYF ineligibility, an account-level “harder to find” limit for accounts that post a lot of ineligible content, and bans for repeated or severe violations. It says restrictions show up in your analytics and bans come with an in-app message — none of that is a silent ban.
“A shadowban lasts exactly 14 days.”TikTok publishes no “shadowban” duration — there is no official 14-day (or any) timer. Any specific number you see is unverified.
“Posting at 3am / deleting the app lifts it.”No TikTok source supports these fixes. Eligibility is about content and policy, not timing rituals.
“Low views = shadowban.”TikTok says a video without many views doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule — or that it wasn’t recommended.

The honest position: reach limitation is real and named (FYF ineligibility), but the mythology around it — fixed timers, magic fixes, secret account death — is not something TikTok documents. When you read a claim with a precise number or a guaranteed trick, treat it as folklore unless it links to a TikTok source.

How can you check your own account?

You don’t have to guess. TikTok gives creators a first-party signal: its FYF standards say creators can check TikTok’s analytics to see how their videos are performing, “including if there were any made ineligible for recommendation.” TikTok’s Creator Academy adds that when a video isn’t eligible for the For You feed, a warning bar appears at the top of that video’s Performance tab. That’s the most authoritative check there is, because it comes from TikTok itself.

Beyond that direct flag, the pattern we look for when reading creators’ analytics is a sustained reach drop — recent videos landing well below your own baseline — sometimes with follower engagement holding up while For You traffic falls. Those are signals to investigate, not proof on their own.

If you’d rather not read raw numbers, there’s a tool for that. Shadowban Checker is an independent, read-only TikTok reach-analytics tool for creators. It connects to your own account through TikTok’s official login and API and estimates whether your reach is being limited — an honest estimate, not an official TikTok status. It compares recent reach with your own baseline, looks at engagement patterns, flags hashtags that look spammy, overused or off-topic (our own heuristic — TikTok publishes no banned-hashtag list), and returns a 0–100 risk score with a plain-language read. What should you do if a video is limited?

If a video was flagged ineligible, the productive response is to align with TikTok’s published standards rather than chase rituals:

  • Post original, edited content. TikTok lists “Reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits, such as clips that show someone else’s watermark or logo” as FYF ineligible.
  • Avoid low-quality, minimally edited formats. TikTok’s own example is “short clips made from GIFs only.”
  • Check the For You feed Eligibility Standards for the full list of content types that don’t get recommended — we break them down in this guide.
  • Appeal if you think it’s wrong. TikTok lets you appeal when content was “made ineligible for the FYF, or otherwise restricted.”
  • Keep posting. Because ineligibility usually attaches to specific content, your next well-made post can perform normally even if the last one didn’t.

The takeaway: stop asking “am I shadowbanned?” and start asking “is this specific video eligible for the For You feed, and does it meet the standards?” That question has documented answers — and TikTok’s own analytics can tell you.

Questions, answered.

Does TikTok admit to shadowbanning?

No. TikTok has never used the word “shadowban” in its Community Guidelines and does not describe a secret blanket ban. It does document For You feed ineligibility — content that “won't be recommended in the FYF” — which is the real, named mechanism creators experience as a shadowban.

How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

There is no official duration, because TikTok publishes no “shadowban.” Any specific figure — the popular “14 days,” for example — is unverified folklore. FYF ineligibility is tied to specific content and policy, not a fixed timer.

Can I see if my video was shadowbanned?

Yes, indirectly. TikTok says creators can check their analytics to see how videos are performing, including whether any were made ineligible for recommendation; Creator Academy says a warning bar appears on that video’s Performance tab. A sustained reach drop versus your baseline is also a signal — a visibility check gives you an estimate.

Does low views mean I’m shadowbanned?

Not necessarily. TikTok’s FYF standards say that if a video isn’t getting many views, it “doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule,” and Creator Academy says it “doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn't recommended.” Reach naturally fluctuates.

Is my whole account shadowbanned or just one video?

Usually it’s specific videos: TikTok describes FYF ineligibility mainly at the content level. It also says accounts that post a lot of ineligible content may be made “ineligible for the FYF and harder to find,” and that bans follow repeated or severe violations — so check your analytics and Account status rather than assuming.
